Dalton State Welcomes New Faculty

Dalton State welcomes 10 new faculty members to campus this fall, according to Dr. Andy Meyer, interim vice president for Academic Affairs.
“We are pleased to welcome our new faculty to Dalton State,” Meyer said. “Our new faculty members bring a variety of experiences and talents to the College. They have a desire to help our students. Their focus is teaching students and helping them become successful. I look forward to working with them in the coming years and am excited to see their contributions to Dalton State.”
Four join the School of Business.
Dr. Garen K. Evans, an assistant professor of economics, earned his doctorate and master’s degree from Texas A&M University. Evans has been an assistant professor at Dalton State previously, as well as an adjunct professor at Harrisburg Area Community College.
Dr. Lorraine R. Gardiner joins the faculty as an assistant professor of accounting. She holds a doctorate degree from the University of Georgia and comes to Dalton State after serving as chief technology officer of STEPS for Assessment, a partnership with California State University Chico Research Foundation.
Dr. Stephen N. Jurich, who earned a doctorate in business from the University of Mississippi, joins the School of Business as an assistant professor of finance. Jurich previously worked as a graduate instructor at the University of Mississippi.
Dr. Douglas L. Smith, Dalton State Endowed Chair and professor of accounting, received a doctorate from the University of Alabama. He served as an associate professor at the University of Montevallo before coming to Dalton State. He was an associate professor at Dalton State previously.
Janet E. Johnson, who holds an education specialist degree from the University of West Georgia, and Robert L. Overstreet, who holds a master’s degree from the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga, join the School of Education. Johnson, who previously taught in the Dalton Public School System and the Whitfield County School System, is the interim field director and a temporary assistant professor of education. Overstreet, a visiting assistant professor, previously served as principal of Andrews Academy.
Three join the School of Liberal Arts.
Dr. Elizabeth Dunaway, an assistant professor of psychology, earned her doctorate from Auburn University where she was an instructor. Kimberly Correll, who has a master’s degree of fine arts from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, is a lecturer in communication. She previously was a part-time instructor at Dalton State and was a video producer at the Ringgold Telephone Company and the theatre coordinator at The Colonade. Zachary Drye, an instructor in digital design, has a bachelor’s of fine arts from the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga. He previously worked as an intern for the City of Chattanooga’s Department of Transportation as well as a designer for the music department at UTC.
Amelia Atwell, who holds a master’s degree from UTC, will join the School of Science, Technology, and Mathematics as a lecturer in biology.
