Spoken Word Artist and Musician to Perform at Dalton State

Spoken word artists have been around for hundreds of years, and soon people will have the opportunity to see one at Dalton State.

Poet and musician, Christian Collier will perform at Dalton State’s Roberts Library, on, Tuesday, Sept. 12 at 6 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

Spoken word is an oral based art that focuses on word play and voice inflection.

Collier started performing 15 years ago. His accomplishments have led him to work with HBO’s Def Poetry cast. Collier was also a 2015 Loft Spoken Word Immersion Fellow, a program that works with historically underrepresented communities and gives financial support to struggling artists.

Collier said not only do “words have power,” but “poetry in particular has the power to bring people from different walks of life together. It also has the ability to realize that your pain, depression, and loneliness are not solely yours.”

“My hope is that through his dynamic performance, our students will explore the similarities and differences in their lives,” said Melissa Whitesell, director of Roberts Library. “Perhaps they will write and perform their own poetry, allowing them the opportunity to amplify their voices.”
