Dalton State Honors Students for Academic Excellence

Dalton State took time out recently to honor its best and brightest students at the College’s annual Honors Convocation. Fifty-eight awards were presented to students for academic achievement during the year.

Sen. Chuck Payne presented the Georgia General Assembly Academic Recognition Award to Ashton Fincher who is majoring in early childhood education. The Georgia legislature each year recognizes one student from each of the University System of Georgia’s 26 colleges and universities for overall academic achievement.

Dr. Michael D’Itri, associate dean of the Wright School of Business, presented the following awards: Outstanding Student in Accounting, awarded to Luke Bearden; Outstanding Student in Finance and Applied Economics, to Savannah Cross; Outstanding Student in Logistics and Supply Chain Management, to Lauren Yates; Outstanding Student in Management to Tina Calabretta; Outstanding Student in Management Information Systems, to April Channell; Outstanding Student in Marketing, to Michael Koop; Outstanding Student in Technology Management, to Johnny Shepherd; and Outstanding Student in the Wright School of Business to Mollie Busie. The Georgia Society of CPAs Award for Academic Excellence was awarded to Jordan Mann.

Dr. Sharon Hixon, dean of the School of Education, presented these awards: Academic Excellence in English for Speakers of Other Languages to Christopher Queen; Academic Excellence in Mathematics Education, to Cierra Waddell; Academic Excellence in Reading/Language Arts Education, to Michele Parham; Academic Excellence in Science Education, to Savannah Goldsmith; Academic Excellence in Social Studies Education, to Miranda Buckner; Technology Integration Award, to Whitney Grant;  Academic Excellence in Early Childhood Education, to Ashton Fincher; Academic Excellence in Secondary Education, to Sarah Johnson; Leadership Award, to Leah Bradley; Multicultural Award to Nadxely Pineda; Exemplar of the Program in Early Childhood Education, to Christopher Queen; and Exemplar of the Program in Secondary Education, to Shauntae Shoelen.

Dr. Gina Kertulis-Tartar, dean of the School of Health Professions, presented the following awards: the G.L. Westcott Award for Nursing, to Emily Trammell; Academic Excellence in Licensed Practical Nursing, to Mary Peden; Clinical Excellence in Licensed Practical Nursing, to Elizabeth Franco;  Highest Academic Average in the Associate of Science in Nursing program to Bailli Douthitt; Highest Academic Average in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, to Taylor Blair; Outstanding Senior in Health Information Management, Tess Medders; Excellence in Radiologic Technology, to both Natalie Cain and Kadaysha Pickens; Academic Excellence in Respiratory Therapy to Katie Curtis;  Service Excellence Award in Respiratory Care, to Carrie Lovett.

In the Department of Social Work, Britney Sullivan received the award for Outstanding Academic Performance, Junior; and Jamie Lee Sherlock earned the award for Outstanding Academic Performance, Senior. The Excellence in Social Work Field Education Award was presented to Megan Callahan; the Leadership Award in Social Work was presented to April Sheffield, and the Social Work Shining Star Award was presented to Sarah Faulkenberry.

Dr. Mary Nielsen, dean of the School of Liberal Arts, presented the following awards: Karen Davis Award for Academic Excellence for Communication, to Jonathan Wright; Rob Narke Award for Academic Excellence for Communication, to Alex Bonine; Academic Excellence in French, to Leah Sample; Academic Excellence in Music, to Gabrielle Smith; Academic Excellence in Spanish to Colby Cochran; and Academic Excellence in Theatre to William Hardin.

Eva Cosby received the Jane Parks Award for Academic Excellence in Composition, and the Sara Myers Award for Academic Excellence in Literature was presented to Madeline Bilbra. 

Other awards from the School of Liberal Arts included: Academic Excellence in American History, Abigail Jordan; Academic Excellence in Criminal Justice, Luis Granados; Academic Excellence in Geography, Abigail Owen; Academic Excellence in Political Science, Luisa Rodriguez; Academic Excellence in Psychology, Alyssa Shelby Mhoon; Academic Excellence in Sociology, Ana Trejo; and Academic Excellence in World History, Jamie Bennett.

Dr. Randall Griffus, dean of the School of Science, Technology, and Mathematics, presented the following awards: Bill Jump Award for Academic Excellence in Biology, to Jessica Rangel; Bob Cooper Award for Excellence in Chemistry, Matthew Tyler Presley; David Wycherly Award for Excellence in Physics, Alyssa Wong; Academic Excellence in Human Anatomy and Physiology, David Peyton; Excellence in Computer Networking/Service Technology, Cameron Williams;  Arvine Phelps Award for Excellence in Calculus, Daniel Satterfield; and Arvine Phelps Award for Excellence in Mathematics, to Micah Chase Goulart.
