Dalton State Hosts Active Shooter Training

06/03/19

Dalton State College recently hosted an active shooter response training for College Public Safety officers and other members of local law enforcement that focused on responding safely and utilizing specific response skills.

“Tragic active shooter events continue to increase the demand for training that teaches law enforcement how to best respond to an active shooter situation,” said Lt. Elicia Walker, a Dalton State officer and facilitator for the training exercise. “Our department wants to make sure that all officers are trained and prepared. Hosting this training allows outside agencies to train with Dalton State officers. Not only do they learn vitally important skills, but they become familiar with each other and learn how to work together to reach a common goal.

“Officers receive ongoing active shooter response training to effectively and safely respond to an active shooter event,” Walker said. “Our recent training was through Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training. This dynamic course is designed to prepare officers to isolate, distract, and neutralize an active shooter. The course covered shooting and moving, threshold evaluations, concepts and principles of team movement, setting up for and room entry techniques, approach and breaching the crisis site, secondary responder tactics, improvised explosive devices, and post engagement priorities.”

Assisting Walker as a facilitator were Coordinating Chief Brandon Bell of the Department of Community Supervision, Board of Regents Inspector Ben Scott, and University of West Georgia Sgt. Nick Garner. All facilitators are ALERRT level one instructors.

“I would like to thank Mashburn Hall Residential Life Director Tim Reilly, and Corvias Operations Coordinator Marshall McDaniel for allowing us to use Mashburn Hall for the scenario-based training,” Walker said.
