Dalton State presents 'The Red Velvet Cake War'

11/08/23

As some families may be preparing for the battle of who makes the best mac-n-cheese, earning the coveted responsibility to supply the frequent favorite at upcoming holiday functions, three cousins in a fictional town in Texas are hosting a family reunion featuring a different prized dish – red velvet cake.

Find out who makes the best dessert when Dalton State presents “The Red Velvet Cake War” on campus in Goodroe Auditorium, opening Friday at 7:30 p.m. The production will run Nov. 10, 11, 16, 17 and 18 at 7:30 nightly and on Nov. 12 at 2 p.m.

“The Red Velvet Cake War” is a southern comedy by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten, highlighting a poorly timed family reunion hosted by cousins Gaynelle, Peaches and Jimmie Wyvette. Gaynelle is trying to stay out of jail and prove her sanity to a skeptical court-appointed psychologist, yet agrees to a bet with her bossy Aunt LaMerle to see who can make the better red velvet cake.

Dalton State students, faculty and staff have spent the semester preparing to bring these whacky characters to life on the stage.

“When I read the script of “The Red Velvet Cake War,” I couldn't stop laughing,” said Kristen West, playing the role of Jimmie Wyvette. “Jimmie is very different than me, so that has been a bit of a challenge. I have had to ‘find her’ within myself to give the character a sense of authenticity to allow the audience to connect with her.”

Directed by Kim Correll, the production features Adrianna White; Lexi Ledbetter; Navah Jordan, Levi Witt; Kristen West; Hannah Castleberry; Payton Cammllarie; Nick Loboda; Aly Lount and David Mills with costumes by Laurie Raper and set design by Craig Raper. The Stage Manager is Kaylyn Orellano.

“I am very proud of this cast and what we have accomplished together,” said West. “We are so ready to share this story with the public. They will not want to miss this hilarious show that will have you laughing till your sides hurt.”

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door. For more information, contact Kim Correll, at kcorrell@daltonstate.edu.
