What is Civil Discourse?

Civil discourse is crucial for several reasons, particularly in fostering a healthy, functioning society.

Civil discourse allows people to listen to opposing viewpoints, question their assumptions, and consider alternative perspectives. This helps bridge divides, encourages mutual understanding, and fosters cooperation among individuals and groups.  It ensures that decisions are made through reasoned discussion rather than through force or intimidation. By engaging others thoughtfully, individuals can more effectively promote social, political, and cultural progress.

The 4 C’s: Virtues of Civil Discourse – Our democracy depends on building civic trust through improved mutual understanding and shared problem-solving. By introducing the 4Cs of civil discourse — Be Curious , Be Charitable, Be Conscientious, and Be Constructive — this course will help you engage and respond to others even when you disagree strongly on contentious social and political issues.

Perspectives – “An evidence-based blended learning program equips students with practical skills to engage in dialogue across lines of difference.”

Debate Team

The Dalton State Debate Team is built upon the Ohio State Four C’s model of civil discourse. Though each of the pillars played an integral role in the team’s formation, in the inaugural year they focused primarily on the pillar of curiosity. This allowed an approach team building focused on building knowledge and developing a receptivity to hearing opposing viewpoints.

The first team formed in 2024 and included students Kaylyn Orellana, Shania Zamora, and John Davis who participated in the 2025 Regents Cup Debate Series.
