Dalton State awarded Governor’s Office of Highway Safety grant

Posted on

Dalton State College has received a $27,118.06 grantfrom the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) to help educate students and the surrounding community on safe driving behaviors.

The grant will help finance “Roadrunners Assisting in Highway Safety” programs that focus on reducing crashes among young drivers by addressing impaired and distracted driving, promoting seat belt use, and increasing awareness of pedestrian and bicycle safety.

“Innovative projects like this are designed with the intent for Georgia and our nation to reach the realistic goal of zero traffic deaths by the middle of this century,” said Allen Poole, director of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. “Each life saved on our roads is one less family that will have to live with the pain of losing a loved one whose life was taken from them in a traffic crash that was completely preventable”

Funds will be used to organize campus and community outreach events, develop educational materials, and implement data-informed prevention strategies that align with state and national highway safety goals.

“This grant and its campus initiatives allow us to build a culture of awareness and responsibility that extends beyond the classroom allowing us to engage students as active partners in promoting safer roadways and healthier communities across Northwest Georgia,” Andrea Roberson, interim dean of students, said.

Programs like “Roadrunners Assisting in Highway Safety” reflect Dalton State’s ongoing commitment to developing informed, responsible citizens who contribute positively to their communities. The grant year for this award will be October 1, 2025, to September 30, 2026.

A member of the University System of Georgia, Dalton State College has more than 5,500 students in a full range of bachelor’s degree programs, targeted associate degrees and career certificate programs. Dalton State College has campuses in Dalton and Ellijay, Georgia.

The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety’s mission is to educate the public on safe driving behaviors and implement highway safety campaigns and programs designed to reduce crashes and eliminate fatalities and injuries on Georgia roads.
