Experience Music in the Moment

Posted on

Live concert on campus allows participants to experience music in the moment.

Dalton State will host concert pianists Julia Mortyakova and Valentin Bogdan on Wednesday, Oct. 4, at 7:30 p.m. in the Goodroe Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

“People don’t think about it, but music really only exists in the moment that it’s being performed. There are recordings, even videos, but those don’t provide the same experience as live music, right there with the performers,” said Ellie Jenkins, professor of music at Dalton State. “Being ‘in the room where it happened’ is a fundamentally different, richer experience than hearing a recording. That’s why I’m so glad that we’re able to host concerts on campus. It’s an opportunity for everyone in the local and campus community to participate in a live concert experience with amazing artists.”

Mortyakova and Bogdan will showcase a repertoire of lesser-known solo piano works by Cecile Chaminade, Teresa Carreno, Carmen Petra-Basacopol, Geroge Frideric Handel and Sergei Rachmaninoff.

“We will unveil these hidden gems,” says Mortyakova and Bogdan, “inviting the audience to embark on a captivating journey celebrating these composers and their invaluable contributions to the rich tapestry of musical heritage.”

Mortyakova currently serves as Chair of the Department of Music and Professor of music at the Mississippi University for Women (MUW). She released a solo piano album, “A Celebration of Women in Music,” and a duo piano CD with Valentin Bogdan, “Journey for Two.”

Bogdan is also a professor at MUW. He serves as the executive director of Music for All Ages, a community outreach program that brings classical music to schools, churches and retirement homes. He is the founder of Festival Yuma, in Yuma, Ariz., and The Downtown Community Concert Series, in Miami, Fla.
