FreightWaves is a data analytics, risk management and transportation information start-up headquartered in Chattanooga, TN. FreightWaves is a SaaS or Software-as-a-Service provider of real-time transportation data for the North American freight market.
FreightWaves and DSC’s C. Lamar and Ann Wright School of Business (WSOB) entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in December 2018 to enhancing the WSOB’s Logistics and Supply Chain Management (LSCM) program with speakers, joint events, and transportation-related research projects. WSOB faculty and LSCM business students have training on the FreightWaves SONAR platform and access to their innovative events and programming. SONAR showcases trends in 135 different U. S. markets providing users with context and insights into logistic market dynamics. Because most shipping decisions are made within 48 hours, using up-to-date data ensures companies make informed decisions critical to global supply chains. As part of this effort, WSOB is a member of the Blockchain in Transport Alliance (BiTA) organization providing research, education, and case examples.
Students majoring in Logistics and Supply Chain Management (LSCM) learn to improve supply chain operations, reduce costs throughout the supply chain, reduce supply chain failures, and mitigate supply chain risk. Our partnership with FreightWaves adds depth in freight pricing, freight futures, and information about freight markets to the WSOB curriculum. FreightWaves also hosts the FreightTech Innovation Challenge, a team-based competition for college students and DSC's WSOB LSCM students participate.
The FreightWaves thesis is that a futures market for freight will allow shippers, carriers, and brokers to negotiate prices based on informed predictions regarding where the market is headed, and provide data to hedge their positions.
