Each student organization will be assigned a primary classification based on the organization’s mission and purpose. Organizations may also receive additional secondary classifications that reflect other areas of involvement or focus.
Classifications are determined by the Student Organization Committee (SOC) using the following category definitions:
- Academic & Departmental
Academic and departmental organizations are connected to a specific academic program, major, or department. These groups support student learning, professional growth, networking, and academic engagement through meetings, events, and educational activities related to their field of study. - Faith-Based & Religious
Faith-based and religious organizations bring students together around shared beliefs, spiritual growth, and faith exploration. These groups may host worship services, Bible or faith studies, prayer gatherings, service projects, discussions, and interfaith activities that encourage community and understanding.
- Fraternity & Sorority Life
Fraternity and Sorority Life organizations are social Greek-letter organizations affiliated with nationally recognized governing councils such as the North American Interfraternity Conference (NIC), National Panhellenic Conference (NPC), or National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). - Club Sport & Spirit Teams
Club sports provide opportunities for students to participate in competitive, recreational, or instructional athletic activities. Spirit teams promote school pride and engagement through performances, traditions, and campus involvement. These organizations are student-led and operate differently from NCAA varsity athletics. Note: After recognition, these organizations are additionally managed through Campus Recreation. - Collegiate Affiliated
Collegiate affiliated organizations work closely with Dalton State College to provide large-scale programming, traditions, services, or engagement opportunities that benefit the broader student body. These groups may receive institutional or student activity fee support to carry out campus-wide responsibilities.
- Community & Civic Engagement
Community and civic engagement organizations focus on service, advocacy, leadership, and positive social impact. These groups often address issues such as community service, civic participation, sustainability, social justice, or public awareness through programs, volunteerism, and outreach efforts.
- Cultural
Cultural organizations celebrate and promote diverse cultures, identities, backgrounds, and traditions. These groups create opportunities for education, cultural awareness, belonging, and community among students from a variety of backgrounds and experiences.
- Honor Society
Honor societies recognize students for excellence in academics, leadership, service, character, or specific areas of achievement. Membership is typically based on established criteria such as GPA, academic performance, or professional accomplishments.
- Special or General Interest
Special or general interest organizations are centered around shared hobbies, passions, talents, or recreational interests. These organizations provide opportunities for students to connect with others who share similar interests while building community and involvement outside the classroom.
